After Jamia, the violence over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) spread to East Delhi with massive rioting taking place in Seelampur-Jafrabad area. Thousands of protesters clashed with police and damaged vehicles and also tried to torch a police post on Tuesday.
More than 10,000 residents of Seelampur, Jafrabad and adjoining areas assembled near Seelampur Chowk around 1 pm and marched towards Jafrabad area. After a short phase of peaceful protest march, it turned violent. The mob started damaging school and DTC buses on the road. Subsequently, some of the agitators pelted police with stones, leading to massive clash.
Mandeep Singh Randhawa, PRO of Delhi Police, said: “We have deployed adequate police force in the area after receiving an alert of protest march scheduled on Tuesday. The police are keeping close tab on the protesters. We resorted to firing tear gas and lathicharge to disperse the mob. We have also initiated operation to identify the accused.”
“We are using drones to monitor entire area as well,” Randhawa said.
