15 killed in poll-related violence as Opposition front demands fresh elections
Initial trends in Bangladesh's general election indicated a "landslide" for the ruling coalition, the Grand Alliance led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League.
However, the Opposition's rainbow coalition, the Jatiyo Oikya Front UOF), led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has rejected the election and demanded re-election under a neutral government.
"At least 100 of our candidates have now withdrawn their names from this election. We are rejecting the results of this election and demanding a fresh poll under a neutral government: said JOF chief }Carnal Hossain, addressing a press conference.
Counting began soon after polling for 299 seats ended at 4 p.m. on Sunday. By late in the evening, a local television station, Channel 24, reported that the Awami League had easily crossed the 15t seats required to form a majority government.
"Remarkable voter turnout has ensured a landslide victory for Awami League," said party general secretary Obaidul Quader.
