Rees-Mogg Appointed As Energy Chief In New Cabinet

Jacob Rees-Mogg, who once blamed high energy prices on "climate change alarmism”, has been appointed business secretary in Liz Truss's new cabinet prompting widespread dismay from campaigners.

As part of his brief, he will oversee energy and climate policy despite his past comments. Climate campaigners and opposition politicians described his appointment as "deeply worrying".

Mr Rees-Mogg will not take on the brief of minister for the climate following pressure from Tory MPs. Graham Stuart has been appointed minister for the climate in the business department. No 10 had planned to give Mr Rees-Mogg the brief as part of his new role as business secretary.

"No government that's remotely serious about tackling the twin climate and nature emergencies would even contemplate putting Jacob Rees Mogg in charge of that portfolio," said Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion. "He's the worst possible candidate at the worst possible moment."

Mr Rees-Mogg has previously expressed climate and net zero sceptic views but will now lead the department responsible for the country's strategy to reach net zero emissions by mid-century.
