POACHERS sawed off the horn of a sub-adult rhino without killing the pachyderm in Assam, leaving forest officials and wildlife experts worried about how the operation was carried out for the first time in India.

Usually, poachers kill rhinos with firearms before hacking off or sawing off the horn but the operation is risky as the sound of gunshots alert forest guards. While there is no dispute that the rhino was made unconscious, nobody has a definite answer as to how the poachers did it. The incident came to light at orang National Park where the sub-adult rhino was seen with a bleeding nose.
