Cites recent downpour that caught Chennai by surprise due to misleading alerts from RMC
CM writes to Centre, wants better tools for IMD office to predict rain

CHIEF Minister MK Stalin has requested Union Home Minister Amit Shah to provide advanced weather prediction infrastructure to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai and upgrade the technology being used there so the centre can make accurate predictions about rainfall.

Stalin brought the issue to Shah's notice a day after the RMC failed to predict heavy rains in and around Chennai on December 30. The heavy downpour inundated many places and disrupted traffic in the city.

Underscoring the fact that the State government relies substantially on alerts from the RMC to prepare the administration to handle exigencies arising out of intense rainfall, Stalin said timely alerts from the RMC help the State and district administrations take preemptive steps to ensure people's safety. “We have, however, noted that RMC is unable to predict red alert situations sufficiently in advance," he added.
