Hanumakonda: Punjab’s Harmilan Kaur Bains upstaged the field by smashing the national record in women’s 1500 metres on the second day of the 60th National Open athletics meet here on Thursday.
Harmilan clocked 4:05.39 to eclipse the Sunita Rani’s mark of 4:06.03 set during the Busan Asian Games in 2002. OP Jaisha’s meet record of 4:11.83 set in Delhi in 2006 also fell by the wayside. Delhi’s KM Chanda kept pace with Harmilan before the Punjab athlete cranked up the pace at the bell to win convincingly.
Undefeated in eight national-level 1500m races since January 2020, Harmilan has improved from 4:14.68 in the Khelo India University Games in Bhubaneshwar last year to 4:08.70 and 4:08.27 in the Federation Cup (March 16) and Indian Grand Prix 4 (June 21) respectively in Patiala. The national mark here was natural progression.
