Four months ago, Sajid Nagariya was working as a manager at a private sports company, bringing football coaching to schools and companies. But his company closed down just before the lockdown. Now, the 27-year-old has been scooting across the city, delivering anything from medicines to mangoes. Nagariya says that while it is a major downgrade for him, something is better than nothing.
The closure of businesses hit by the lockdown has prompted many like Nagariya to put both pride and ambition into hibernation mode and focus on livelihood — at least as a temporary measure. White-collar professionals who sat inside airconditioned offices are now doing jobs like driving, loading and packing; and mommies who once exchanged cupcake contacts are sheepishly hawking masks and gloves on their Whats App groups.
Suddenly, the colour of the collar has ceased to matter. “I don’t particularly enjoy being a runner, but I had to think about my house rent and my nine-month-old daughter,” says Nagariya, who lives in Mumbai. The work is physically tiring since sometimes he has to travel long distances. He has also recently begun training to work at an online educational portal, and he hopes the job will come through, but until then he will deliver away.
