It is a practical and scientific system that takes you step by step to an unconditioned mind, SRI M says to MONA MEHTA

Yoga Has No Ideology

You have said in your book ‘Yoga Also For The Godless’ that one doesn’t have to believe in God to be a yogi. Is God not important in yoga?

Sri M: Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is the most defining work on yoga. Yoga Also For The Godless is a word-forword translation of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. Yoga derives its terminology from Samkhya, the oldest of the six darshanas of Indic philosophy. It was authored by Kapila Muni. It’s so important that Ved Vyasa, in the Bhagwad Gita, quotes Krishna saying: ‘Among the munis I am Kapila’.

Samkhya means numbers, and it also means a step-by-step system through which the mind is developed. Samkhya does not say that there is no divinity, but that there is no creator God. It is a dualistic philosophy that talks about Purusha as pure consciousness, and Prakriti, nature. According to Samkhya, the whole world, as some present-day scientists would also say, comes about from permutations and combinations of elements and chemicals. Purusha is behind everything. Each of us has both prakriti and purusha aspects. To break free of the bondage of prakriti and its gunas — tamo, rajo and even sattva — is the aim of Samkhya Yoga. The second chapter of the Gita is also about Samkhya Yoga.
