In a blow to the India women’s team as they launch their tour Down Under, vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been ruled out of the opening ODI against Australia at Mackay on Tuesday after being struck on the thumb in practice, head coach Ramesh Powar revealed on match eve.

It has been a year which has seen India’s T20I captain dogged by illness-she suffered from COVID-19 in March, injury and poor form. The hard-hitting, key batter for India had just recovered from a quadriceps injury which forced her to end her stint in ‘The Hundred’ in England after just three innings.

“Harmanpreet was deemed fit and hence was selected for this tour, but unfortunately some days back she got a hit on her thumb, so she’s not available for the first ODI,” Powar said in a virtual presser on Monday. The coach said a call on whether she plays in the rest of the ODI series will be taken “according to her pain and fitness management.” The injury forced her to miss India’s warm-up match on Saturday, which India lost by 20 runs, as well.
