Irony of it all: Saplings destroyed amid garden upgrade

Local corporator said some 2,000 trees and saplings grown using the Miyawaki technique have been destroyed at the Colaba woods garden

Mumbai: Residents of Colaba have expressed their displeasure over the BMC allegedly destroying trees at the very garden it is entrusted with the task of improving. On Tuesady, a grill removed from the Colaba woods garden was placed over saplings that have been planted using the Miyawaki technique.

Some 24,000 trees have been planted using the Miyawaki method through corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the Colaba woods garden since the year 2019. These include saplings of 30 different indigenous species. Local corporator Harshita Narwekar said around 2,000 of the 24,000 saplings and trees have been destroyed.
