So after their 14-day quarantine, in which they didn’t set foot off their property, Pat made a sign. She put it against the windshield of her Volkswagen, which has New York license plates. It said:
“We have completed our 14-day quarantine. We (heart) Maine.”
The Hreljanovics were following Gov. Janet Mills’ emergency order requiring a two-week quarantine for people who come here from out of state. That requirement is keeping some summer people away, according to Duke Shepard, who caretakes homes on the island.
“I’ve got maybe a fifth of my people,” said Shepard in a phone interview. “I’ve been in this business for 55 years and I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Shepard said his clients who have arrived are all self-isolating for two weeks. He knows because he stocks up on groceries for them, or, in the case of the Hreljanovics, picks up a dump sticker at Town Hall. But he wonders about some of the people he sees driving around with out-of-state plates, he said.
