New garden addresses food insecurity

BLUE HILL—Last fall The Blue Hill Garden Club broke ground, or lawn rather, on Tenney Hill by the GSA dorm.

Many volunteer hours and several yards of compost later, a large community garden is beginning to sprout.

Of course gardens are always food resources, but this one takes the community idea one step further, opening its bounty to any and all wishing to come harvest.

According to statistics released by Good Shepherd Foodbank of Maine, 18 percent of Hancock County residents are expected to experience food insecurity in 2020, up from 12 percent in 2018.

Because of these numbers, “it feels especially important that we increase the availability of healthy food in our community,” said Blue Hill Garden Club Co-Chair Rachel Emus
