Proven Ways To Break Into Fashion Photography

Fashion Magazines

Becoming an in-house photographer or even working as a freelancer for a fashion magazine can be a dream for many and the road towards it is filled with obstacles and rewards equally. But this can be achieved with a few simple steps. The first step in your journey towards working with fashion magazines is to grab a copy of a few different magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan, etc. Read the articles and interviews written in them thoroughly and try to understand the photography – the concept behind it, why is it so appealing, what made the image reach here. Asking yourself these questions will lead you further on your road towards becoming a fashion photographer. Getting to understand the idea behind a shoot and the approach the photographers towards an idea/ theme is a hard-earned and valuable skill. Imitating other photographers’ styles might sound like a bad idea in terms of creativity, but during the initial stages of your career, just trying to achieve those looks and feel of a photograph will teach you a lot about this field. You can then start planning and move towards developing your own style. Having a style helps you stand out from the crowd, enabling people to easily identify your photographs among many others.

When you are ready with some good photographs, send your portfolio to the editors of various magazines. You can find the contact information of the editors in the first few pages of the magazine. Don’t be afraid to send something different. You might think that a photograph isn’t looking like the others you’ve seen on various magazines, but if you are confident about your work, be bold and go ahead. Risky is the new safe. People must be able to identify you with your images. If your work is good enough, you can rest assured that you will get to work with them and you’re all set for your road to fame!
