Your chuntering PC gaming friends probably asked, “But can it run Crysis?” in the late noughties, when Crytek’s shooter was at the cutting edge of graphics. It was a showcase and set a benchmark for all studios to match up to.
As Steffen Halbig, project lead for Crysis Remastered at Crytek reflects: “Crysis set the industry standard for first-person shooters with stunning visuals, highly evolved gameplay, and an enormous sandbox world.”
The game spawned countless imitators, though itself shared much with Crytek’s previous game, Far Cry. It had a zeitgeist tick-sheet of features for 2007 (the PS3 version arrived in 2011) that included an open world map and open-ended missions, but it was your Nanosuit that delivered Crysis’ unique gameplay.
On the fly you could divert power to Armour, Strength, Speed, and Cloak. Each offered new skills to master, including the ability to hurl large objects and turn invisible, Predator-style, for short periods of time. It was a toy box that demanded to be played with.
