You could call it a blessing in disguise that the Uncharted movie got stuck in development hell for over a decade and has only now been released, years after we bade farewell to Nathan Drake and his adventures. Having that figurative line drawn in the sand makes it easier to reboot PlayStation’s biggest blockbuster action hero via an origin story for his big screen debut.

While a brand-new story, the film nonetheless takes inspirations from the games, as fans would always have wanted it to. The most notable borrowings are Uncharted 3’s flashbacks to a young Nate and his first meeting with his future mentor, friend, and roguish father figure Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan (played respectively by a charming Tom Holland and a glaringly ’tache-less Mark Wahlberg), plus Uncharted 2’s unforgettable in media res opening, albeit swapped out with the third’s cargo plane sequence.
