There is so much power in a smile. And so much power in helping someone and seeing them smile!
When I get out of the railway station to go to my office every morning, a smile greets me from a long distance - the smile of an aged woman waiting for my support. I know the amount I give is very small, often sufficient to have a breakfast or lunch at a Government sponsored, heavily subsidised canteen. But I give because I feel God today wants me to give and I am just doing that.
We all expect help, one way or the other from others but we never realise that we too can be of help in a similar way to the needy. An act of assistance, even if it looks very small or ordinary from a common man's perspective, may be extraordinary from the needy person's perspective. We take pride in conveying to others the costly things we possess or the fabulous lunch we had. But we rarely take pride in giving. We expect others to help us. But we don't think of those in similar hardships that we too once faced and follow the example of the way we got help in those trying times. There is nothing wrong in expecting help from others. After all, the secret of life is just that - to live with and among people. That is give and take. But we hardly think of others for giving and think of others only for receiving something.
