She works in Portugal at the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve, which is home to charismatic species such as bottlenose dolphins and seahorses. The seagrass meadows there are also a nursery for the local fisheries, including cuttlefish, sea bream, octopus, and sea bass.Globally, seagrasses provide valuable habitat to over one-fifth of the 25 largest fisheries, but nearly one-third of the known meadow area has been lost, largely due to pollution, climate change, coastal development, deforestation, and destructive fishing and anchoring techniques.At Sado, the meadows face those threats, as well as dredging to deepen the shipping channel for the nearby port and shipyard. The dredging doesn&rsquo;t directly disturb the federally protected meadows, but stirs up sediment, reducing the light the plants need to survive.To save the seagrass, Gaspar first needed to map it. Diving surveys by her team would gauge the health of the meadows, but she needed an ally to determine their locations. She turned to the people who know the meadows best: the women who fish them. She recruited eight women and trained them to use GPS devices to denote the edges of the seagrasses as they fished. The resulting map informs authorities on how to lessen the impact of dredging and where to grant licenses for oyster beds.The women continue to serve as guardians of the meadows by monitoring them and promoting sustainable fishing practices in their community.
