Red Kites, slightly larger, redder versions of Asian Black Kites, are found across Europe. These birds were slaughtered in large numbers in the Middle Ages* in Britain, as they were considered pests.
In about two centuries, Red Kites were hunted to near extinction. In fact, the species was declared extinct in England in 1871 and in Scotland in 1879. In 1903, the first steps toward Red Kite conservation began and continues today, making it one of the world’s longest conservation programmes. The programme reintroduced the birds to the United Kingdom from other European countries.
