EVERY winter I hear reports of not only really big specimen perch coming from Passies Main Lake, but lots of back-up fish, too, around 2-3 lb.
It’s been a venue on my ‘bucket-list’ for many winters, and when I heard that three anglers had recently shared a fantastic catch of more than a dozen specimen 'stripys' to 3 lb 9 oz, and then I heard about a monster 4 lb 12 oz fish, I had to get my tackle out and head south.
Picking up my good friend, Hampshire-based Ross Booker, en-route we arrived in good time, and quickly headed halfway up the Causeway Bank, an area that fishery manager Rob had recommended.
The reason why I say ‘quickly’ is because every time I seem to book a day’s perch fishing, the so-called perfect perch conditions of cloud cover and low atmospheric pressure seem to elude me, leaving me with the 'worst' conditions – blue skies and high pressure. I feared the same today, as there was also a chilly northerly wind!

Making Short Work Of Specimen Chub
It takes angling guide Kenny Parsons a few hours to drive from his home, near Bath, to his favourite Wessex rivers, but it doesn’t seem to bother him, as he just loves to catch big chub on feeder and fl oat tactics, his personal best standing at 7 lb 12 oz. One of his favourite methods for this cunning species is a maggot feeder with a short hook link.
