The former Madison-Genesis DS on racing at 50, wine and drum ‘n’ bass
On a scale of one to 10 how do you rate your last race?
I’d say and eight and half or nine. It was the Tour of Malta, a Masters race, and I won two stages and got a second on another and got a second on GC.
You’re the oldest man in the race here at the CiCLE Classic, at 50; how come you’re back racing?
I did the DS thing for a couple of years and kept reasonably fit and after I left Madison I was at a bit of a loose end. I went travelling round South East Asia — Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia — with a backpack and I thought the one thing I miss is riding my bike with a bit of a competitive edge. I thought I’d do a bit of Vets racing, which I have been doing, and when the opportunity to do this arose I thought, ‘Why not?’ It’s one of the few big races in the UK that I’ve not done. It’s an icon so I thought I’d give it a nudge.
Are we going to see you on more races at this level?
