Time trialling is the ultimate test of cycling fitness so get out and pit yourself against the clock

Things To Do In June

Time trialling is a sport of personal bests. Conversations in club rooms and cafes up and down the country will still turn to the question of what your best time is over 10 or 25 miles. It’s a beautifully simple measure that has more recently sparked a revolution in aerodynamics that has attracted the kind of engineering input usually reserved for Forumla One racing.

The quest for straight-line speed is one of the purest forms of any physical sport run over a set distance. The addition of technology makes time trialling particularly attractive to those with an almost obsessive attention to detail. It’s also a fun way to test yourself without having to worry about other competitors affecting your result.

So it is to time trials that we turn our attention for our monthly ‘things to do’ feature. June will have many events up and down the country, so we have selected a few fast courses where personal bests are a possibility on the right day.

Keep your eye on the weather for that elusive ‘float day’ that promises low air pressure and low air density (a bit of moisture in the air can help too) and don your tightest, fastest skinsuit. Remember to look up, be alert to traffic and strap on a bright rear LED light.

Further details on the events and how to enter are on www. cyclingtimetrials.org.uk.
