Jonny Hayes on his latest stadium anthem, feeling a part of this year’s celebrations and looking forward to another cup final.
IN 1976, Boney M’s Daddy Cool reached No.6 in the UK singles chart. And while the catchy disco anthem may not be obviously tied to football, the stadium adaptation the Paradise faithful have conjured for Jonny Hayes this season is an instant earworm. Good luck getting it out of your head for the rest of the day.
For the Irishman himself, it wasn’t until the journey back from Celtic’s title-winning 3-0 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie that he realised that the Hoops fans had been singing this the whole time.
“I didn’t even know what song it was!” said Hayes in an exclusive interview with the Celtic View. “We were on our way back from the Aberdeen game up there, and KT, who’s essentially the DJ of the team bus and the dressing room, put Boney M’s Daddy Cool on.
“I was like, I know this tune! And KT quickly told me that’s the song my own tune is based on. I’m quite oblivious to all of that stuff, but there have been some great moments when hearing the fans singing it.
