Looking Back At Canary Clashes

Despite being formed as long ago as 1902, Norwich City didn’t play Everton in a competitive fixture until 70 years later.

In 1971/72, The Canaries won the Second Division title to bring topflight football to Carrow Road for the first time.

They finished a point ahead of Birmingham City, two ahead of third placed Millwall and three clear of Queens Park Rangers, who finished fourth.

Their first game in the First Division was against Harry Catterick’s Everton, who had finished a disappointing 15th the season before…just two years after winning the title with Kendall, Harvey, Ballet al.

The Norwich manager for the historic fixture at Carrow Road on Saturday 12 August 1972 was Ron Saunders, who appeared three times for Everton during his playing days.

Thirty-nine minutes into the opener, Jim Bone scored Norwich’s first top-flight goal.
