The club has stretched across the Wirral Peninsula since 1869 and hosted The Open on a dozen occasions, most recently in 2014. Its credentials stand up to very close scrutiny and it would be easy for ‘Hoylake’ to trade on its illustrious history. Yet even for the royal and the ancient, failure to evolve is to fall behind.
