What have you got there?&rdquo; asked the yard manager stationed in the air-conditioned offices of the Safe Harbor Marina in Essex, Connecticut. It was a bright day and darkness was hard to come by. We were going to need some if we were to test the Clamplight Waterproof Flashlight ($35) from Blackfire (blackfireusa.com), the manufacturer of flashlights that do more than just illuminate. Seemingly designed with engine rooms in mind these flashlights bend, they clamp&mdash;they do just about everything aside from doing the actual work for you. Once you use one of these, you&rsquo;ll think it was crazy (let&rsquo;s be real, it was) to put a flashlight in your mouth to do any work whatsoever.After giving a similar sounding pitch, we were led to the perfect testbed: a Sabre 42 Flybridge that the yard had just finished servicing in the off season. First stop: the engine room. And boy, does this thing shine. With 190 lumens of light in high mode, it could easily reach the far corners of the engine room if, let&rsquo;s say, you&rsquo;re on the hard or want to hop down there while the electricity is off to do a quick inspection. Such a highly concentrated beam has a trade off, however: less than two hours of battery time. But if you&rsquo;re not doing heavy repairs, the three AAA batteries (sold separately) should last you a fair amount.Let&rsquo;s talk about the built-in clamp, because it just might be able to out-muscle the one you have in your toolbox. With its patented design, the Clamplight is the only flashlight that has a clamp integrated into the body. Don&rsquo;t have a clampable surface? The clamp converts to a light stand by pressing those easy-to-grasp legs down and sliding a lock into place. And, lest I forget, it&rsquo;s waterproof&mdash; but don&rsquo;t go thinking you can use it for diving. (Think rain, splashing, and accidental immersion. But hey!&mdash;it floats.)With three modes (high, low, and strobe), the yard guys immediately saw a use for it. After closing up the Sabre 42, we ran into one of them on the way out. Negotiations were made, hands were shaken, and the Clamplight was happily leftfor duty in the yard&rsquo;s possession.
