The list of backup quarterbacks the Raiders have had since Derek Carr beat out Matt Schaub and took over as the team’s starter during his rookie season in 2014 isn’t exactly a compilation of who’s who. More like, who?
Matt McGloin. Connor Cook. E.J. Manuel. A.J. McCarron. Matthew McCrane. Mike Glennon. DeShone Kizer. Nathan Peterman? Let’s get serious, here.
A few household names, maybe, but nothing to get excited about.
Marcus Mariota might change that pattern.
Signed to a two-year deal in March to be Carr’s backup, Mariota’s arrival in Las Vegas has already generated a buzz as the Raiders prepare to head into their first training camp in their new home.
Although every expectation is that Carr will be the team’s starter if and when the 2020 season gets going, for the first time in a long time there is as much, if not more, attention being paid to his backup.
There are several reasons for that.
A large chunk of the Raiders fanbase has been disenchanted with Carr for some time now, and there is growing agitation over his inability to get the team into the postseason — one playoff appearance in six seasons.

NEWS & NOTES
The Raiders had one of the easier schedules in 2020 and got only eight wins to show for it. Things won’t get any easier in 2021, either.
Looking back at 2020 season
The 2020 season will absolutely be remembered for being one of the strangest and most disappointing in franchise history.
Gruden feeling the heat?
“I know there is a big bull’s-eye on my chest, certainly. If the people want to use that as an incentive, then so be it. I worked for Al Davis in 1998. That was pressure. I was 34 years old. I’ve dealt with pressure before. I don’t really feel pressure. I love the excitement and thrill of competing, and I can’t worry about things I can’t control in that regard. I know people will want to step on me and beat me, and that is just the way this league is.”
