LIFE on the road has been tough for Lancashire and Glen Chapple admits they will need to find a way to engineer away wins starting with a trip to champions Essex.
Since returning to Division One in 2016, all eight of the Red Rose’s County Championship victories have come at Old Trafford or their Southport outground.
With their most recent success as visitors at Glamorgan in Division Two under Ashley Giles, Chapple says a poor away record hampered last year’s title tilt.
“We could have done with winning three or four games away last year and we would have been right up there,” said Chapple.
“There were pitches where a draw was the favoured result and then towards the end there were very sporting pitches that we just came out on the wrong side of.
“It’s something we’ll look at, but it hasn’t been a long-standing issue. If anything, a couple of years ago people were asking us the opposite question.”
Trends like these can change with the wind, brought to bear in Lancashire’s nightmarish defeat to promoted Nottinghamshire in the opening round.
Following on from their most fruitful summer on home soil since 2000, Chapple’s side folded to 73 all out within the first hour of the final morning at Old Trafford.
