STUART BROAD is confident of being as fit and focused as he has ever been by the time the Ashes start later this summer.
The 32-year-old seamer has played five County Championship matches for Nottinghamshire so far this season and, after being rested by England for this week’s encounter at Kent, will return for the home game against Essex at the end of the month.
Broad’s workload is being carefully managed ahead of the start of the Test summer, which will begin after the World Cup with a four-day match against Ireland at Lord’s next month.
The Ashes then begin on August 1 at Edgbaston and Broad is aiming to be in peak condition by the time he takes on the Australians. “I know my final game for Notts will be against Surrey in July, then we go straight to an England training camp before the Ireland Test match,” Broad said.
“My mindset and self-set mission statement is to be as fresh for the first Test match of the summer physically and mentally as if it’s the first game of the season but with the best personal preparation ever.
