Chris Stocks discovers that the West Indies legend who has made a fortune in the game’s shortest format still values the longest form of the game
Of all the people in all of the places it was Chris Gayle who became Test cricket’s most unlikely advocate in Barbados this week.
In an interview in which his ‘Universe Boss’ persona was turned up full dial, the 39-year-old announced he would be retiring from international 50-over cricket at the end of this summer’s World Cup.
The youngsters in the West Indies team apparently “owe it” to Gayle to help him win it, too, however unlikely that scenario appears.
He also warned the England & Wales Cricket Board they “wouldn’t have a tournament” if he wasn’t involved in the first edition of the Hundred next year, adding: “I guess England should invite me over. Then I’ll explode the tournament and say ‘thank you guys; bring in a youngster now. I set the trend for you like I did in all tournaments around the world’.”
Of course, Gayle, not known for his modesty and as adept at slipping into third person when talking about himself as he is at preying on wayward bowling, has been the advocate for players throwing in their lot with Test cricket and becoming T20 mercenaries in various tournaments around the world.
