TOBY RADFORD has hailed the influence of Chris Gayle as two-time World Cup winners, West Indies, attempt to reach the finals in England next summer.
The West Indies batting coach could only watch on and admire as Gayle smashed the UAE bowlers to all corners of Harare last week, smashing 123 off just 91 balls as Stuart Law’s side won the opening qualifying match by 60 runs.
He was dismissed for just 14 against Ireland in a match billed as the clash of the tournament on Saturday, but there’s no doubt that his presence in the West Indies’ dressing room will be vital as the qualifying stage reaches its business end in Zimbabwe.
The thought of the West Indies having to qualify for a World Cup would have been unthinkable when Gayle made his one-day international debut against India in Toronto back in September 1999.
