Fault the O-line, not the quarterback

Daniel Jones isn’t the problem. Oh he’s certainly part of the problem these days, what with consistent lapses of youth that clearly contribute to the dysfunctional mess known as the New York Giants.

What I mean is that he isn’t the bigger problem, just as Saquon Barkley wasn’t the bigger problem before he got hurt. They are a couple of developing players doing things that developing players do while flashing sufficient signs of precociousness.

First it was Barkley with his pass-blocking woes. Now the popular angle centers around Jones’ well-documented mistakes in season two. The ball security. The awful interceptions.

But they are temporary issues. They are largely the product of inexperience and an offensive line that has a heck of a time blocking the guys in front of them. When the organization gets around to providing sufficient support, Jones will become one of the better quarterbacks in the league.

A quarterback who can help this team win a Super Bowl.

Yes, that kind of quarterback.

For now, Jones is just another young quarter back on a bad team.

We find ourselves addressing and debating Jones’ potential and general manager Dave Gettleman’s decision to select him sixth in the 2019 draft. It’s a bit symmetrical that the two Giants players taking the hardest hits publicly this season – Barkley and Jones – represent Gettleman’s two biggest picks as the team’s GM. But Barkley and Jones should have bright futures.
