Billy Shaw speaks with Ugo Ehiogu, the former Aston Villa defender and current coach of our development squad, about his time at both of this afternoon’s clubs.

A Foot In Both Camps

It was 25 years ago this week that Ugo Ehiogu first fell in love with the FA Cup when his Aston Villa side battled us in a third round tie at Villa Park.

A 19-year-old fledgling centre half in the midst of his first season in claret and blue, he went on as a substitute for Steve Staunton for his first ever taste of action in the age-old competition in what was only his seventh senior appearance for the club following his move from West Bromwich Albion.

The game, played on January 5, 1992, ultimately ended goalless but it was enough to give Ugo the bug. In the years that followed, the defender enjoyed some epic adventures in the competition with Villa and even played in the 2000 FA Cup Final – the last to be played at the old Wembley Stadium.

It therefore comes as no surprise that, in his current role as our development squad coach, which sees him take charge of our young professionals in the Premier League 2, today’s tie is particularly sentimental for the former England international.

“I always keep an eye out for Aston Villa – it’s a club that’s got a big place in my heart even though a lot of the personnel have changed considerably over the years. It’s always nice when your current club encounters your old one,” he said.
