MY FIRST GAME Spurs 2 Stoke City 2
THE FAN “My first game at Tottenham was in the 1946/47 season when Spurs drew 2-2 with Stoke City in the FA Cup. I was 13 and so small, I remember being handed over people’s heads so I could get to the front and sit along the fence.

“It was such a long time ago now but there are some things I remember about football at that time, such as how women didn’t go to games as they do now and that there were some games where you couldn’t see the other end of the ground because of fog.

“I can also recall how the half-time scores were done by hand on a whiteboard and, of course, sitting along the fence as a youngster. These days, my son and three grandchildren are all season ticket holders.”

THE MATCH

The visit of Division One side Stoke City for this FA Cup third-round tie attracted great interest in N17, with over 65,000 fans turning up at White Hart Lane to see if we could cause an upset.

With the great Stanley Matthews in their ranks, Stoke was among the leading pack in the top flight while we were in Division Two at the time, sitting in sixth place in the table.
