But for the Washington Football Team, it’s all good. A solid draft class that figures to be one of the foundations of future success.
No. 2 overall pick Chase Young has been everything expected and more. He’s simply balling nowadays to lead the team’s resurgence. Antonio Gibson was looking at offensive rookie of the year honors before suffering turf toe against Pittsburgh that will probably cost him several games. Safety Kamren Curl has drawn raves from coaches as a seventh-rounder.
OK, that’s just three draft picks, but injuries took out fourth-rounders Saadiq Charles and Antonio GandyGolden. Fifth-round linebacker Khaleke Hudson, center Keith Ismael and defensive tackle James Smith-Williams are reserves. And, throw in recent rookie pickup defensive end Casey Toohill and 2020 will be remembered for its plusses from newcomers.
In most drafts, losing teams are lucky to get one outstanding player, three starters and a couple reserves. It’s harder for the elite teams to draft as productively simply by picking later and already have established starters. Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin joked with Young following the Dec. 7 game of hoping to never lose enough games to get a talented player like the defensive end.
