MOTIVATION
Powertrain electrification is currently the most advanced near-future technology of choice to comply with the envisaged CO2 objectives and to further reduce the CO2 emissions of light-duty vehicles. The electrification of automotive propulsion systems can be divided into mild hybridisation (mild hybrid electric vehicle, MHEV), full and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), and battery electric vehicles (BEV). In the EU market, the proportion of EVs depends on various factors; mainly on customer demand, which is largely dependent on vehicle cost and regulatory boundaries.
Considering it is an evolutionary process, the share of electrification technology is likely to shift over time towards higher degrees of electrification and larger battery capacity. However, the trend towards electrification is governed by the capability and cost of the underlying battery technology. Currently, driving range and charging limitation can be considered as major obstacles or a large market penetration.
Moreover, alternative fuels gain significance in the transition period to 100 % sustainable mobility. They combine low vehicle costs with a considerable CO2 emission reduction and meet customer expectations, since the characteristics and the handling of these fuels can be adapted easily from traditional fuels. Furthermore, compared to electrification, alternative fuels require lower investment in distribution infrastructure.

OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE SAFETY CONTRIBUTION OF TODAY'S AUTOMOTIVE HEADLAMPS
Good lighting makes a major contribution to road safety. In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation. New light sources like LEDs and lighting functions (glare-free high beam, partial high beam) have been available for several years, so that an extension of the proven CIE method is necessary, which takes into account, among other things, changed switch-on and service lives of new lighting functions and represents a generally understandable evaluation system. An evaluation system presented in the following by the Technische Uni versität Darmstadt, which was developed by an encompassing expert commission, is intended to provide representative data and enable an objective evaluation of headlamp performance.
