A pair of design’s most unconventional minds team up to give two futuristic time-telling machines a sci-fi-looking facelift.
When Maximilian Büsser left the top position at Harry Winston’s successfully-revived watch division in 2005 to start his own manufacture Maximilian Büsser & Friends, also affectionately known as MB&F, he did not set out to make timepieces, but three-dimensional kinetic sculptures dubbed “Horological Machines” instead.
“I was the only child, and a very lonely one, and the only way I could escape my loneliness was by daydreaming. So by the age of 10, I was a full-time superhero saving the world, a fighter pilot during the Second World War and Luke Skywalker or Han Solo,” recalls the Swiss entrepreneur who reportedly catapulted Harry Winston’s timepiece revenue from $8 million to $80 million in just five years. “Those were the years which formed aspects of the man I am today, and I transfer many of those childhood dreams into our pieces at MB&F. The brand is as much my autobiography as my psychotherapy,” he adds.
