We can accomplish a lot on our mobile devices today, especially since theyre always with us, are always connected, and are increasingly becoming more powerful.
Despite this, smartphones and tablets cannot seem to evolve into becoming productivity devices. Sure, we can run productivity apps, but the lack of multitasking functions, a true PC interface, and desktop-grade applications, are consistent barriers no smartphone or tablet has been able to overcome.
Apple keeps pushing the iPad Pro as a replacement for laptops. But, pro or not, the iPad is more of a content consumption device. And even if there are thousands of apps on iOS, the lack of support for a mouse, external monitor, and a proper file system put a ceiling on what it can do. Android tablets are even worse; they don’t even have proper tablet versions of apps, and simply blow up smartphone apps for use on a larger display. If tablets are struggling to truly replace laptops, can we expect smartphones to succeed?
