The last pre-lockdown wedding I attended was a mountainside winter affair in Mussoorie more than a year ago—the kind of celebration where there was no talk of social distancing at the sangeet, and the only bottles we eagerly reached out for were of Champagne. Cut to this January, when I returned to the wedding circuit for a friend’s reception in Mumbai: my worry about forgetting the hook steps to the latest chartbusters was replaced by the fear of dancing too close to strangers on the floor. My beaded evening clutch was packed with sanitiser and a spare mask instead of lipstick. I paid more attention to the gloves on the servers’ hands than the curation of the menu. The entire experience was an unfamiliar one.
