THE KINGDOM OF AWADH IN LUCKNOW

Modern-day Lucknow is imbued with the old-world charm of its Awadhi past. Take a ride around the city in a tonga and allow your tonga wallah to guide you to Lucknow’s best spots. Don’t miss the Bara Imambara and its legendary Bhool Bhulaiya, the Chota Imambara, and the imposing Rumi Darwaza, which stands between the two Nawabi monuments. Spend an evening around the Chowk and Aminabad areas and feast on delectable Malawi, kakori, sheekh and boti kebabs. The best part: this royal Awadhi repast can be had in tiny street stalls or at standalone restaurants like Tunday Kababi (168/6, Old Nazirabad Road, Aminabad) and Raheem Hotel (29, Phool Wali Gali, Chowk).

THE LEGEND OF JIM CORBETT IN

KUMAON When in the Kumaon, relive the terror of the three man-eaters and Jim Corbett. Visit his erstwhile home, now a museum, in Chhoti Haldwani village. The Corbett Gram Vikas Samiti (Corbett village. in) is a community-run project that organizes treks in the surrounding hills that follow Corbett’s historic trails. Gurney House (0992738239) in Nainital is another landmark building where Corbett lived for a few years. Although a private residence today, this home is a treasure trove of his memorabilia, and the owners are more than happy to show history buffs around.
