Taking Your Soul For A Walk
Planet Goa|Volume 9 Issue 3

INSTEAD of lazing on bed on a cosy Sunday morning, I found myself at the historic gate to the village of Rachol.

Taking Your Soul For A Walk

A troupe of walkers was already there, some having travelled from Panjim, Porvorim and even distant Bicholim! The host Mayuresh Khandeparkar representing “Soul Travelling” arrived promptly at 8.00 and with a big smile welcomed the small band of followers.

The walk began at the Gate of the fort of Rachol. Mayuresh spoke of the history of the place: “This is the Gateway of the Rachol fort. The village of Rachol is divided into two parts, the Cotta(fort) area and the island of Rachol (ilha de Rachol). Apart from the island, the whole present day village was a fortified area. Unfortunately most of the fort has been destroyed by the ravages of time. The only thing that stands till date is the Gateway which leads to Rachol. This fort was well known for its battles between the Vijaynagar and Bij apur empires in 1520 after the collapse of Kadamba dynasty in Goa.
