BARS Locomotive Fleet Broken Up
Rail Express|January 2018

The sale of the Devon and Cornwall Railways (DCR) operation by its parent company may have brought about the end of main line Class 31s.

BARS Locomotive Fleet Broken Up

EARLY November saw British American Railway Services complete the sale of its DC Rail operations subsidiary to a new owner. However, this agreement did not include any of the locomotive fleet previously used by DCR, these having remained the property of RMS Locotec, another subsidiary of BARS, from which they were only hired.

Thus November 10 saw six Class 31s and six Class 56s put up for sale by tender by RMS Locotec as surplus to requirements. Bidders were given just seven days to inspect the locos and table offers, this extremely short timescale being partly driven by the need to vacate Washwood Heath by the end of November.
