The concept of women in mining in South Africa is a fairly new one – newer than our democracy. It was only in 2002 that our government took a meaningful stand behind women and introduced the Mining Charter which, among other conditions, required mining companies to ensure that at least 10% of their workforce were women by 2009. This target was only achieved in 2014.
