Human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause genital warts and cervical cancer, and there are more than 200 different types. Two of these strains (16 and 18) cause 70% of cervical cancers and precancerous cervical lesions. I t is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, cervical cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer in women, and 570 000 new cases were documented worldwide in 2018 (representing 6,6% of all female cancers). What causes HPV?
A It is transmitted through skin-to-skin genital contact, including oral sex, anal sex and vaginal sex. Approximately 80% of men and women will be infected in their lifetime.
If I get it, will I have it forever?
A The infection may clear up within a few months, and most will be gone within two years. In 20% of women, however, the infection persists. When this occurs, the development of pre-cancerous lesions and cervical cancer is more likely. It is therefore important to go for regular Pap smears.
Are fever blisters on the mouth HPV?
A No. Fever blisters are caused by the herpes virus and have no relation to HPV.
