From the superficial to the deeply transforming, Suchita Parikh-Mundul traces the evolution of skincare treatments.
Back in 3000 BC, blue-blooded Egyptians paid labourers with tubes of body oil—the value of skincare products has only grown since. Over the millennia, skincare has evolved from plant oils used by ancient Egyptians to the technologically advanced treatments of today. The goal, however, remains unchanged—to protect skin from nature’s harsher elements and to ultimately slow down the effects of time.
INTO THE FUTURE
Speaking of over-the-counter anti-wrinkle creams, Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, dermatologist, Trasi’s Clinic and La Piel, Mumbai, confirms, “Some are really effective because of their advanced formulation." According to Dr Jamuna Pai, owner, Blush Clinic, New Delhi, the concentration of active ingredients in them is lesser so it can be used by all.
The miracle ingredient retinol, used in several skincare products, is the champion of the cosmetology world today, “Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. It increases blood flow to the skin and stimulates the cells that produce collagen, which is the elastic fibrous structure that gives skin its firmness." explains Disha Meher, national expert–skin and nails, Lakmé Salon.
With better quality products, skin treatments have become much more effective as well, including treatments like simple and basic clean-ups.
The facial has transformed from its basic avatar to offer bespoke solutions for specific needs. “Facials can be very basic, using hand-mixed pastes and compounds, or can incorporate procedures, using electrical stimulation of facial muscles to temporarily tighten skin. They can treat specific skin problems, such as acne, dryness or wrinkles,” explains Dr Pai. Disha adds, “Before we suggest a treatment, we check basic factors such as skin type, current skin condition, age, lifestyle, stress level and any other specific needs.”
