Winter Warmers

As the thermometer drops, your motivation to run outside may also dip. It’s time to go cool-weather gear shopping!

Winter Warmers

Too cold to go for a run? You may not realise it, but your sports kit could have a profound impact on your ability to exercise. From trainers to tights and tees, the clothes you choose to work out in can help ward off injury and illness by protecting your body against the elements. The trick to winter training has always been to dress in layers, so that you can strip off as your body temperature rises mid-activity, then layer up again as it rapidly decreases post-workout. But modern-day fabrics mean there’s less of a need for layering. High-tech winter kit is increasingly being made from smart fibres that provide insulation in chilly weather and allow heat to escape as the body warms up. Many of these handy items also wick away sweat, meaning that moisture doesn’t sit on your skin and make you feel cold. Whether you’re walking, jogging or sprinting, we’ve rounded up the latest cool-weather kit to keep you cosy – and keen to exercise – over the dreary winter months.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BE WEARING

Any-old jacket just won’t do! If you want to stay warm when it’s cold outside, you must look for technical fabrics that boast breathable, sweat-wicking and thermal properties. Different weather conditions mean it’s best to own a variety of technical kit – insulated jackets, thermal base layers, waterproof trainers. Fortunately, we’ve got you covered. Here are the materials to look out for…

Synthetic insulation
