Shanghai is futuristic and fun, charged with the energy of 24 million people. It’s a city that buzzes at all hours of the night and day, and nowhere is this more evident than along Nanjing Road East, with its crowds of food and fashion lovers.
This car-free street is home to flagship stores for Lego and M&M’s, high-street fashion and sports brands, luxury designer houses and smaller local vendors, but be sure to poke your head behind the various storefronts to discover hidden foodie gems.
My favourite find is the meat moon cake from Zhenlaodafang Cake Store. With its crisp, flaky pastry, it’s the Chinese version of a good meat pie.
The street takes you into the heart of the iconic Bund waterfront area, a living showcase of the city’s 1800s colonial heritage.
