Five forest destinations for the intrepid traveler…

Call Of The Wild

‘It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.’

Robert Louis Stevenson sure knew what he was talking about when he crafted his beautiful quote. Ask any holiday maker who has been on an arboreal adventure and he will vouch for the same. There is indeed something truly magical and mystical about a forest be it tropical, temperate or boreal that can change the very fabric of our souls.

Forests cover almost 30 per cent of the landmass in the world and this calls for a different kind of explorer for a forest holiday is certainly different from one on an island or beach or mountain. Here are some handpicked destinations for you to enjoy the shadowy splendour of the some of the world’s magnificent forests.

THE HEART OF BORNEO

One of the oldest rainforests in the planet is in Borneo, Asia’s largest island. The jungle is believed to be 140 million years old and hosts 3000 arboreal species, 15,000 plant species and more than 400 terrestrial mammal species. Plan a trip to Malaysia and then make your way to Semengoh Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre and the vast caves of Gunung Mulu National Park, before climbing the island’s tallest peak, the 13,438ft Kinabalu. You can spot an orangutan or two and perhaps a few Asian elephants along the way. Keep an eye out of giant pitcher plants and the famous Rafflesia flowers. If you are lucky you could even meet one of the forest-dwelling Dayaks.
