After filling up yet another hot-water bottle, I hobbled back to my desk, clutching my lower back. The dull ache was intensifying – I knew the painkillers had started to wear off.

As I sat back down, I shuffled around in my seat, trying to find a comfortable position. But the excruciating pain ripped through me again. The constantache and random agonising twinges first started in May 2011. Aged 22, I was pulling out of a junction when a speeding driver crashed into the side of my car.

I was lucky to escape with just-bruising and minor whiplash. And after a quick check-up with the doctors, I was feeling better within a few days.
