As 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death, the Duchess of Cambridge makes the ultimate tribute to her late mother-in-law...
As we commemorate the 20 years since Princess Diana’s untimely death in a Paris car crash, Prince william and Duchess Kate’s official visit to the French capital this week comes sharply into focus.
Questions will be asked as to how the royal family will mark the occasion, after rumours of a deep-seated rift continue to swirl. The feud was reportedly sparked by Earl Spencer’s haunting eulogy at Diana’s funeral, where he hit out at The Firm for their treatment of his sister, driving a wedge between the Windsors and the Spencer Clan.
In the earl’s dramatic pulpit address, he shockingly suggested that the Spencers were better placed to look after Diana’s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. In a thinly veiled attack on Prince Charles, he said, ‘On behalf of your mother and sisters, I pledge that we, your blood family, will do all we can to continue the imaginative way in which you were steering these two exceptional young men, so that their souls are not simply immersed by duty and tradition, but can sing openly as you planned.’
In the years following their mother’s death, it is thought Princes William and Harry had little to do with their uncle in a show of loyalty to their father and their grandmother the Queen. However, as the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death approaches on 31 August this year, we can reveal that the Duchess of Cambridge has stepped up to the role of go-between in a bid to reconcile the two families as a tribute to her late mother-in-law.
