Relax by the sea, hike up the Alps and embrace the beauty of peaceful lakes in Central Europe’s hidden gem.
Why go?
It might be one of Europe’s youngest and smallest countries, but what it lacks in size and age, Slovenia makes up for in diversity. A few hours’ drive from the gorgeous coastline on the Adriatic, you can be surrounded by lakes and valleys, so it’s perfect if you can’t choose between an outdoorsy break or a relaxing one. Bordering Austria, Italy and Croatia, flights take only a few hours to the capital Ljubljana, so it’s worth putting on your wish list before everyone discovers it.
Culture in the capital
Ljubljana has been voted greenest capital in Europe and it’s easy to see why as it’s cyclist- and pedestrian friendly. The city is packed with medieval history – keep your eyes peeled for dragon images on bridges and statues. But its main landmark is Ljubljana castle. Access is via cable car, and with plenty of exhibitions for children and grown-ups, it’s a great place to learn more about the history of the country.
